This is a “hands-on” leadership position primarily responsible for effectively directing design and development engineering operations for projects covering a range of neurotechnology devices at NIT’s Columbus headquarters. The individual will provide technical leadership, strategic product guidance, project definition, and performance management of group resources in pursuit of new product and business opportunities.
Provides technical direction and becomes actively involved in development of product as required to meet schedules or resolve problems
Researches, designs, and develops highly advanced new applications that result in new product/business opportunities
Leads cross-functional product development teams to research and develop aspects of neurotechnology devices, which may include pre-clinical studies, human-centric design, biomedical data, hardware, software and consumable integration
Sets standards of technical competency and skill development. Creates an environment that consistently fosters employee understanding of quality and motivates all employees to actively participate in the process of continuous improvement. Accountable for the performance of subordinates as well as the work output of managed subcontractors. Models optimum leadership competencies to inspire an energized, empowered and accountable team and maintains a strong customer focus.
Accountable for the management of performance, analysis and interpretation of research and technology data from a variety of sources, including vendor specifications, clinical studies, animal models, mathematical models, and/or bench experiments; provides strategic and tactical leadership while working with others to provide definition of new product
features or therapies based on this data and a thorough understanding of clinical needs and benefits. Topics include advanced algorithms, closed-loop systems, connectivity, materials, stimulation efficacy, MRI safety and micro-electronics.
Initiate and contribute to project deliverables including project plans, product specifications, risk analysis, drawings, prototype assembly instructions, feasibility test plans, protocols, and reports
Successfully execute technical project tasks and delivers milestone consistently, ensuring customer focused (including internal and external customers), and high quality product deliverables. Provides technical guidance, insight and hands-on support to mentors and grows junior engineering personnel.
Develop product design to meet customer requirements, applicable regulatory requirements and quality control standards. Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer requirements, and related specifications
Remains current on developments in neurotechnology field, regulatory requirements and industry trends with a focus on championing market-driven technologies
Nurtures innovation, supports activities that would promote new ideas, products, methods resulting in higher company value, brand recognition, customer awareness through expanding the intellectual property portfolio, including but not limited to authoring white papers, technical briefs and assisting management in new and emerging technology development and product applications.
Performs engineering evaluations on second sources, interfacing with vendors and suppliers and briefs management; assists management in cost estimates, scrap reduction, forecasting, resource planning. Maintains a safe and productive, professional, fun to work environment.
- Provides in-depth, timely and periodic feedback to management on matters such as product, process, resource issues, engineering failure modes and corrective actions via detailed reports and presentations.
BS in relevant engineering discipline, with advanced degree or equivalent experience
8+ years of experience in medical device design and development
5+ years of experience leading a project team
Strong experience in engineering and product development with demonstrated design capability and thorough understanding of the FDA regulated product development process
Must possess strong ability to negotiate and maximize effectiveness of resources and influence others internally and externally
Proven ability to effectively lead, manage, supervise, hire, and mentor highly talented engineering personnel as individual contributors and leaders on product development teams
Open and collaborative style - must be comfortable working in an environment where ideas are shared and challenged
Must enjoy being accountable and willing to hold others accountable
